Refund Policy
When and how National General refunds insurance premiums if you cancel or change your policy.
Last updated: September 26, 2026
Overview
Insurance premiums pay for coverage over a period of time. If your policy ends early, you may be entitled to a refund of the premium for the time you were not covered, called the unearned premium. This policy explains how that works.
Free-look period
If you cancel a new policy within the first 10 days after it starts, or a longer period if your state requires it, and no claim has been filed, we will refund the full premium you paid.
Cancelling your policy
You can cancel your policy at any time by calling us or contacting your agent. After the free-look period, we refund the unearned premium from the date your cancellation takes effect.
To cancel, we may ask you to confirm the request in writing and, for auto policies, to show proof of other insurance where state law requires it.
How refunds are calculated
- Pro rata: in most cases, we refund the exact share of premium for the days remaining on your policy.
- Short rate: in some states, a small cancellation charge may be deducted if you cancel mid-term. Your agent will tell you before you cancel.
- Fees: policy fees, installment fees and late payment fees are fully earned and are not refunded, unless the law requires otherwise.
When a refund may not be available
- If we have paid a total-loss claim on the insured vehicle or property, the premium for that coverage is fully earned.
- If the refund amount is less than $5, it may be applied to your next bill or waived where permitted by law.
- If you owe a balance on the policy, the refund will first be applied to that balance.
If we cancel your policy
If National General cancels or does not renew your policy, you will receive a full pro-rata refund of any unearned premium, with no cancellation charge.
Policy changes
If you reduce your coverage, remove a vehicle or qualify for a new discount during the policy term, we will credit the difference to your account or refund it to you.
How and when you'll receive your refund
Refunds are issued within 30 days of the cancellation or change date. We return money to the original payment method when possible. Otherwise, we mail a check to the address on your policy.
